How to Get Court Records
Jess Reddon serves as Wahkiakum County Clerk and ex officio Clerk of Superior Court. Her office holds the permanent Superior Court files. District Court staff keep the limited-jurisdiction records: misdemeanors, traffic, infractions, small claims, and Cathlamet municipal-service matters. Start your Wahkiakum County docket search with an official Odyssey case search for Superior Court, or Find My Court Date for District Court. Then write down the exact case number, the case title, the event date, and the document name. Do that before you request anything.
- Identify the court, case number, parties, and exact record or hearing date.
- For Superior records, use NextRequest, visit the Clerk, mail the request, or call 360-795-3558 for routing.
- For District records, call 360-795-3461, ask at the counter, or follow the court's current copy route.
- Choose electronic, paper, certified, authenticated, exhibit, or audio service and confirm access.
- Prepay the quoted fee by an accepted counter, mail, or online method, then retain the receipt and production note.
The official Clerk profile lists the local office and the kinds of Wahkiakum County court records it keeps.

Those details help direct a Superior Court request to the county office holding the original file.
Wahkiakum County Court Records Intake
The Wahkiakum County document-copy page routes Superior Court copy requests through NextRequest. In the request, give one or both party names. The case title works too. Add the case number and each document title you want. State whether the copy should be certified, non-certified paper, or non-certified email. A narrow request is far easier to price and review. "Send the whole file" is not. Run an Odyssey docket search first to identify the filed item. The Clerk's copy instructions lay out each request field. They also cover the rule for confidential papers.

That warning matters. Confidential records and qualified domestic relations orders cannot travel by ordinary email. An eligible person seeking confidential copies may need valid government identification. Secure pickup or mail is the delivery route. The page describes United States mailing. It also gives special steps for requests from abroad. For District Court, remember that a calendar search is not a document request. Ask District staff which form, copy charge, identity proof, and delivery method currently apply.
Wahkiakum County Court Records Mailing Rules
The Superior Court copy page describes United States mail service. It asks requesters to add $2 for postage and an envelope where that instruction applies. International requests need more. The Clerk wants a mail form, a payment arrangement, a self-addressed envelope, and enough postage. Confirm the total before you send funds, since weight and record format can change delivery costs. Confidential papers and qualified domestic relations orders still cannot go out by ordinary email. A person entitled to a copy may need government identification and secure pickup or mail. The rule is about delivery as much as access. Someone may have a right to the paper. Yet that person can still be barred from receiving it over an unprotected electronic channel.
Types of Court Records
Superior Court in Wahkiakum County covers a wide span of files: felony criminal cases, civil lawsuits, family law, probate, guardianship, mental-health or alcohol commitments, and juvenile material where the Clerk is the custodian. District Court keeps its own limited-jurisdiction records. Access turns on the document and the case, not just the broad category on the docket.
- Registers of actions and chronological docket entries
- Pleadings, motions, responses, orders, and final judgments
- Public exhibits and attachments accepted in the court file
- Hearing audio ordered for a specific proceeding date
- District citations, written statements, orders, and payment records where public
- Probate, guardianship, and family papers that are not confidential or sealed
Federal cases sit outside these custodians. Federal records for Wahkiakum County run through the Western District of Washington and PACER, and an appeal creates a separate Division II appellate record.
Wahkiakum County Court Records Request Split
NextRequest also takes Wahkiakum County administrative-record requests. The Washington Public Records Act governs them. That does not turn a judicial case file into a routine agency record. Case access is principally governed by General Rule 31. Sealing follows General Rule 15, plus court-specific copy procedures. Budgets, contracts, agendas, policies, and agency correspondence can go the county PRA route. Exemptions still apply. The county public-record portal illustrates how the administrative intake works.

Use the portal with the right custodian named. Ask whether a court document should instead follow the Clerk's copy process. The county generally answers a PRA request within five business days by producing records, acknowledging it with an estimate, or denying it. That deadline is not a promise a court copy will be done in five days. If a request is unclear, the county may seek clarification. It may also produce records in installments. Under county policy, a requester usually must respond within 15 days after a status or production notice. That keeps the request alive.
Wahkiakum County Court Records Product Choices
Pick the product based on how you will use it. A non-certified electronic copy is the lowest published per-page option for reading an eligible filing. Paper may fit a file that has to be reviewed away from a screen. Certification adds the Clerk's formal attestation. Authentication or exemplification is a separate product with a higher first-page amount. Exhibits and hearing audio are priced differently. The cost rides on item or proceeding date, not the ordinary page rate. A register of actions is not the same product as the papers behind it. Tell the Wahkiakum County Clerk what you need. Say whether it is the docket, a named order, a judgment, an exhibit, or audio. Staff can then check access and estimate cost. That avoids producing pages that never answer the question.
What a Court Record Contains
A court record is more than its docket. Think of the docket, sometimes called the register of actions, as a dated list: filings, settings, rulings. The case file sits behind that list. It holds the papers themselves. When you truly need the text of an order, motion, judgment, or exhibit, ask for that item by name. An event line on the Wahkiakum County court docket tells you something happened, but it is no substitute for the certified document itself.
| Case Number | The court's key for the file and all later requests |
|---|---|
| Docket or Register | Dated procedural events, filings, settings, and results |
| Pleadings | Petitions, complaints, answers, motions, and responses |
| Orders and Judgments | Signed rulings and final court action where entered |
| Exhibits | Accepted evidence or attachments, subject to access limits |
| Audio | A recording tied to a named hearing or proceeding date |
| Access Note | Redaction, seal, confidentiality, or eligibility information |
Write down the file date, the document date, the title, the disposition status, and whether Odyssey gave you a public link. Those details are what Clerk staff need. With them, they can pull the right Wahkiakum County court record fast and explain anything that is missing.
Wahkiakum County Court Records Audio
Audio is ordered by proceeding date, not as one generic case download. The county form wants the parties named. It also asks for cause number, your name, email, phone, and each hearing date. Pickup or mail is your choice. Each court date costs $25. Payment rides along with the request, and checks go to Wahkiakum County Clerk.
Plan on five business days, the form says, and watch for confirmation at superiorcourt@co.wahkiakum.wa.us. An unclaimed copy may be recycled after 30 days. One wrinkle involves mailing. The audio form lists $5 for mailing. The general copy page points to $2 for postage and envelope. Ask the Clerk which figure fits your order before you pay. Also know that court audio is not a certified transcript. The county offers no separate transcript portal.
Certified Copies and Fees
A plain copy just reproduces an eligible page. A certified copy carries the Clerk's certification, which some uses demand. Authentication or exemplification is yet another service, adding formal proof on top. The Wahkiakum County fee schedule is dated July 27, 2025. It says fees are prepaid and not refunded. Cash, cashier's check, money order, and law-firm check are listed. Confirm Point & Pay eligibility for your request. The Washington statutory fee source supplies the legal frame for Clerk copy and search charges.

Read the statute and the county schedule side by side. The Clerk sets the final amount, mailing cost included.

Wahkiakum County Court Records Payment
The Superior Court Point & Pay route takes an approved online fee. Pick Pay a Bill and choose the item. Add another bill if needed, then enter a case number or document-request number. Party names work for some payment items. The vendor tacks on a convenience fee, so check the total before you submit.

Paying is not access. The payment screen proves nothing about whether the record can be released. Ask whether the county's $2 mailing instruction applies. Also ask whether postage is extra for your chosen format. A good receipt shows the case or request number plus the amount. Payment alone does not clear a restricted copy. Identification, redaction review, or secure delivery can still happen at the Clerk's end.
Wahkiakum County Court Records Production Timing
The audio form gives a five-business-day estimate. It asks requesters to wait for email confirmation. It also warns that unclaimed copies may be recycled after 30 days. Those rules cover audio only. They are not a deadline for every Wahkiakum County court records request.
County administrative requests run on their own five-business-day rule. Within that window the county provides records, acknowledges the request with an estimate, or denies it. Court copies are different again. A fee quote, redaction, eligibility review, archive search, or secure delivery can all add time. Keep your request number and follow the schedule the actual custodian gives you. Never transfer one process's timing onto another.
Public Access and Sealed Records
Washington General Rule 31 opens court records to the public. Law, rule, order, or case law can say otherwise. Access has limits, though. Not every item can be searched online or emailed out. General Rule 15 governs sealing and redaction. It favors redaction when that step can protect sensitive facts while keeping the rest of the record open.
Key access rules:
GR 31 governs access to court records, dockets, calendars, exhibits, and court-created material.
GR 15 governs sealing and redaction, and party agreement alone does not make a file secret.
GR 22 protects confidential information in family and guardianship matters, while RCW 13.50.050 limits juvenile disclosure.
Sealing a document does not erase history. The public docket may still show an event proving something was filed. Addresses, financial identifiers, child information, mental-health material, and some guardianship records can be withheld. Some of these items can also be redacted. The Clerk applies the rule and any order to each Wahkiakum County court record. The search portal does not make that call.
Wahkiakum County Court Records Request Check
Before you submit anything, note the court and the exact case number. Also note the case title, file and event dates, document title, copy type wanted, delivery method, and any access problem you already know about. Afterward, keep the request number and fee quote. Hold on to the payment reference, production date, and whatever explanation comes for a withheld or missing item. This little audit trail pays off. It is how you catch a wrong document or push back on an incomplete response.
If a docket shows a judgment but no PDF: Request the judgment by case number, exact title, and event date. Choose certified service if the receiving office requires it.
An old file missing from the classic state search may still live in paper, microfilm, archive indexes, or a staff-assisted search. Ask. A District calendar entry with no citation image means you should contact District Court for the file itself. A federal document is a different animal. Stop the Wahkiakum County request and use PACER. The county Clerk cannot certify a federal record.
